Implemented at hundreds of universities across the nation, the SATC combined both practical and lecture-based military instruction with the general college curriculum. The intended goal was to create a viable population of educated and trained young men who would then join the U.S. military and fight in the war. Southwestern University was one of the colleges with an SATC chapter, which was only active during the fall semester of 1918; Germany’s formal surrender in November rendered its purpose moot. However, as the World War I collection shows, the SATC was a highly valued part of campus life during its existence.

The collection of World War I materials from Special Collections prominently features documentation related to the SATC, which is highlighted here on our site. This collection gives us a clear idea of the amount of effort it took to establish, organize, and run this federal military recruitment program. Among these items are correspondence between individuals and institutions, grade reports, photographs of SATC students, curriculum outlines, and pamphlets. Although military instruction was the impetus for the creation of the program, academics were meant to be the central component of the SATC, as shown by the many education-related pamphlets, notices, and letters. The amount of highly detailed correspondence between various agencies, including Southwestern University, the University of Texas at Austin, the U.S. Naval Reserve, and the War Department, is tangible evidence of the value placed on this program by its founding institutions.

You can also find these items on the University of North Texas's Portal to Texas History.</text>

<text>In 1918, during World War I, the United States War Department created the Student Army Training Corps (SATC) program to help fill positions in the military with trained men.

On the first page, 'American Council on Education Students' War Service Campaign' is typed in the upper center. It is dated 'August 20, 1918' and is from 'Robt. L. Kelly Campaign Director'. The body of this letter announces the inclusion of the War Department's official statement approving the revised plan for the Students' Army Training Corps. On the second page, the letter is dated 'Washington, D. C. August 20, 1918' and is signed 'Ralph Barton Perry, Executive Secretary, Committee on Education and Special Training.' The body of this letter announces that 'General Peyton C. March, Chief of Staff, today approved, by order of the Secretary of War, a plan for the organization of a Student Army Training Corps in the educational institutions for the country to train men as officers and technical experts in the army. The plan for the Student Army Training Corps, as altered to conform to the plans of the War Department for lowering the draft age, will utilize the plant, equipment, and organization of the colleges to maintain a reservoir of officer material for training, from which it will be possible to meet the enlarged needs of the various branches of service'. It also discusses the differences between the tracks for the SATC. On the back of the second page, 'SATC' is written in pencil and underlined.

<text>In 1918, during World War I, the United States War Department created the Student Army Training Corps (SATC) program to help fill positions in the military with trained men.

The first page reads, '(Advance Copy) War Department Committee on Education and Special Training' and is titled, 'Special Bulletin' then 'Information for Medical Schools and Program for Premedical Students'. The body of the text discusses the schedule and requirements for medical and premedical students in the SATC, including practical and theoretical military instruction, professional instruction, and physical training. Medical schools themselves are expected to introduce military training and the War Issues course, in addition to continuing their existing programs until such a time as an official program for professional schools has been established by the government. The second page of the printed pamphlet continues from the first page. It is dated 'October 3, 1918' and signed 'Committee on Education and Special Training, By R. C. Maclaurin, Educational Director, Collegiate Section.' In the body of the text, a schedule of required courses for premedical students is prescribed, which includes both science and military instruction. On the third and back page of the printed pamphlet, there is no text.

<text>In 1918, during World War I, the United States War Department created the Student Army Training Corps (SATC) program to help fill positions in the military with trained men.

<text>This is a three-page printed pamphlet. On the first page, the letterhead reads, 'War Department Committee on Education and Special Training' and is dated 'Washington, September 10, 1918.' It is from the 'Committee on Education and Special Training' and signed 'By order of the Committee, Grenville Clark, Lt.-Col. A. G. O., Secretary.' It is addressed to 'Institutions where Units of the Student Army Training Corps are located' and is about the 'Course on the Issues of the War'. This is an updated version of a memorandum dated August 27, 1918 and distributed at Fort Sheridan and Plattsburg. The body of the text includes three sections on instructions concerning the War Issues course. The first section is '1. Purpose', which clearly states the content and goals of this course; it is "a course on the remote and immediate causes of the war and on the underlying conflict of points of view as expressed in the governments, philosophies and literatures of the various States on both sides of the struggle. The purpose of this course is to enhance the morale of the members of the Corps by giving them an understanding of what the war is about and of the supreme importance to civilization of the cause for which we are fighting." The next sections are on '2. Modification of Existing Courses' and '3. Time'. On the second and third pages of the printed pamphlet, the instructions for the War Issues course are continued. The next sections are: '4. Organization'; '5. Combination with English Composition'; '6. Content'; '7. Opportunity for Questions'; and '8. Materials'. Instructions are continued again onto the back and last pages of the printed pamphlet. The sections are '9. Attitude' and '10. Nomination of Instructors'. It is signed 'By order of the Committee, Grenville Clark, Lt.-Col. A. G. O., Secretary.'
